UPDATED: Marshalltown Fire Crews Responded To 3 Fires This Weekend

House fire at 406 W Madison
MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa-- The busy streak continued over the weekend for firefighters, police, and paramedics in the city of Marshalltown. Beginning Saturday through 1PM Sunday the 12th the Marshalltown Fire Department responded to three fire calls.
The first of the many calls came in at 1AM Saturday. Firefighters were called to 201 North 2nd Avenue for a dumpster fire. Upon arrival a dumpster fire was found and extinguished. The second call for the department was at 1:13AM Sunday. Crews responded to 206 ½ South 3rd Avenue for a fire in an upper level apartment in a two story duplex. Three cats were killed in the blaze, and one dog, and an additional cat were taken into the care of the Animal Rescue League. The fire was ignited by combustibles left on a hot stove. The total loss was estimated at $5,000.
The third fire was reported Sunday at approximately 9:59AM, WolkenWeather.com broke this story shortly after its occurrence. Emergency crews were dispatched to 406 West Madison Street. Upon arrival firefighters found heavy smoke and fire showing from the front of the structure. Crews attempted to enter to extinguish the flames, however conditions were too severe to endure. While fighting the fire the second level floor collapsed. Two occupants did escape the home, however they were injured and transported by paramedics to Marshalltown Medical & Surgical Center. The home is considered to be a complete loss according to a press statement released by officials, and the investigation is continuing.
The string of fires come after a historic building was destroyed in downtown Marshalltown last Tuesday. Officials consider the fire that destroyed the Main Street building suspicious.
